Outside Sales vs Digital Marketing (No Contest!)

Please subscribe! The radical change brought about by the discovery of electricity and the advent of trucking changed the game for bread production. Grist mills (where grain was ground into flour) were no longer at the mercy of a water wheel on a river or stream to turn their millstones. Even during heavy rain runoff, when the river or stream was flowing fast, it could still only flow SO fast.

Electricity replaced running water as the power source for mills, and metal machinery replaced millstones. This new setup could produce flour exponentially faster. Those refusing to accept the advances were left to fall by the wayside of history.

This is a metaphor for today’s Outside Sales Departments (the horse and buggy slowly bringing small amounts of grain to be ground into flour slowly by a millstone turned by a waterwheel on a river or stream) versus digital marketing (the truck quickly bringing massive amounts of grain to be ground into flour quickly by machinery turned by electricity).

On this channel I share my observations from the business world on how communication affects sales, morale, culture, and employee retention.

As the generation that did business face-to-face retires, younger decision-makers have come to power and they prefer electronic communication over in-person meetings. What’s more, the internet has made in-person meetings far less necessary today. Even so, many businesses still rely on the tired and obsolete sales model of in-person meetings. These businesses will fade away, and businesses that embrace virtual communication as a sales model will thrive.

I also examine the range of personality types, and how the one-size-fits-all sales approach is ineffective across much of this range.

In addition to INTERoffice communication (sales, marketing, etc.), I also examine INTRAoffice communication (culture, morale, employee retention and turnover, and effective/ineffective communication from boss-to-employee, employee-to-employee, boss-to-boss in the same workplace).
